Influenza is highly contagious and outbreaks occur almost every year around this time. Flu affects people of any age but it can be more severe in people who are over 65 years old, anyone with a chronic medical condition (such as chronic heart conditions, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes mellitus and immunosupression due to disease or treatment) and pregnant women. 

The Flu vaccine is a safe and effective way to help prevent flu infection. Vaccination is recommended for anyone in any of these high risk groups. It is also advised that Healthcare workers and Carers in contact with anyone in these high risk groups also get the vaccine.
