High blood pressure is an important risk factor for heart disease.

Blood pressure above a defined safe limit is referred to as Hypertension. Hypertension forces the heart to work harder and is the single most important risk factor for heart disease and stroke. 

Every year, 10 million people worldwide die from high blood pressure related causes. Only around half of those would have known in advance that their blood pressure was too high.

This year, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness of high blood pressure and blood pressure screening is being led by two organisations representing the world's leading cardiologists and hypertension specialists - the International Society of Hypertension and the World Hypertension League. 

This campaign - May Measurement Month, aims to measure the blood pressure of millions of people from 1 - 31st May 2017 at screening centres in up to 100 countries all around the world. These people will leave knowing their blood pressure and what they should do next.
