If you suffer from particular long term disabilities or illnesses then you may be able to join the Long Term Illness (LTI) scheme. You are welcome to contact us for more information about the LTI scheme. If you have a Medical Card then you do not need to be a member of the Long Term Illness scheme.
Benefits of the Long Term Illness Scheme
The benefit of being a member of the LTI scheme is that you will be able to obtain treatment, medicines and equipment related to your illness free of charge. This scheme is not means tested. If you require treatment, medicines and equipment unrelated to the condition your costs will not be covered in the scheme and you will have to pay. Therefore LTI patients should also apply for the DPS Card and the GP Visit Card.
The Long Term Illness Book
If you qualify for the Long Term Illness scheme you will be issued a Long Term Illness book. This book contains the type and quantity of the medicines you need. Your doctor will sign the book and you can then bring the book to your pharmacy when you require your medicines. Medical or surgical devices that you are prescribed by your doctor or occupational therapist are supplied to you from your local Health Office.
You can get more information on the Long Term Illness scheme from your local Health Office and online from the HSE here.
