Body Mass Index (BMI)

DUE TO SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS RELATING TO COVID-19 WE HAVE TO SUSPEND INSTORE TESTING

We offer calculation of your BMI as a free service. This is part of our Weight Management Programme, however you can walk in without an appointment and we will calculate your BMI and advise you as to what it means for you.

What is my Body Mass Index?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat obtained from your weight and your height.  It applies to both men and women.

How is my BMI measured?

We will measure your height and weight.  Your BMI is obtained by dividing your weight by your height.  Your BMI is the same if you use metric or imperial measurements for all measurements.

Here is a short video explaining how your Body Mass Index is calculated.

What does Your BMI score mean?

If your BMI is between 20 - 25 you are considered to have an optimum healthy weight.

However a BMI measurement below 20 may indicate that you are underweight.

A BMI measurement above 25 is considered high and could indicate that an individual is overweight.

A Word of Warning

BMI does not differentiate between fat and muscle. Athletes such as rugby players can have a higher average muscle mass resulting in them a high BMI measurement. Similarly the BMI scale is not suitable for children or pregnant women.

We recommend that if you are concerned about your BMI measurement either drop in or contact us about your BMI reading and we can explain how the measurement relates to you.
