Vitamin E (Tocopherols)

Functions of Vitamin E:

Main function of Vitamin E is as an antioxidant, reducing oxidation of lipid membranes and unsaturated fatty acids, and helping remove the threat of free radicals produced by various chemical reactions in the body.

Uses of Vitamin E:

 
  • Prevention of ageing, tissue degeneration and skin changes through prevention of free radical damage.
  • May help in the prevention of atherosclerosis by reducing thrombin formation.
  • Used both internally and externally to assist in repair of skin lesions, ulcers, dry skin and burns and to reduce long term scarring after injury.
  • Vitamin E (plus Vitamin C) may prevent progression of varicose veins.
  • Relief of menstrual pains and menopausal symptoms (including headache, hot flushes, vaginal itching and dryness).
  • May reduce neurological pains from shingles
    Helpful in preventing eye problems such as poor vision and cataracts.
  • Large doses of Vitamin E to be avoided for people with high blood pressure.

Sources: Best sources are the oil component of all grains, seeds and nuts.  Other good sources are spinach, turnips and greens.
